Clipper Around the World Yacht Race

About the Show
The Clipper Around the World Yacht Race is the adventure of a lifetime—a chance for ordinary people to step out of their everyday existence and climb aboard a sleek racing vessel bound for the seven seas. Experienced sailors need not apply: This year’s neophyte crew includes businessmen, lawyers, teachers, students, doctors, police officers, a pest controller, a housewife, and a smoking-cessation advisor.

Each of the identical 68-foot boats is skippered by an expert yachtsperson. Over 10 months, they’ll sail 35,000 miles as they race to some of the world’s most exotic ports, including stops in Brazil, Japan, Panama, and South Africa. This is reality programming at its most compelling, and the ultimate sailing challenge. All the training in the world can’t prepare novice sailors for their first towering sea or raging monsoon. It’s taking on raw nature with your bare hands—and surviving!

The race’s founder, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, explains, “Clipper has one very simple philosophy: We want people to finish the race saying, ‘That's the best thing I have done in my life.’”

Step out of the ordinary and put big adventure in your life with Clipper Around the World Yacht Race.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston Sir Robin Knox-Johnston
British supersailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is the creator and chairman of Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Robin is also the man who, on April 22, 1969, completed a solo nonstop circumnavigation of the globe—the first man ever to accomplish that phenomenal feat.

To cap it off, 25 years later, in 1994, Robin and co-skipper Peter Blake won the Jules Verne trophy for the fastest circumnavigation of the Earth. Their time was 74 days, 22 hours, 18 minutes, and 22 seconds. For his efforts, Robin was knighted in 1995, becoming Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, CBE.
