During most of the year, sailing in Hawaii is intense, vigorous, and demanding. But sailing in summertime is utterly treacherous. The waves are huge, the wind whips at 30 knots, and the seas are so violent they can break a boat in two. That’s the setting for the biennial Waikiki Offshore Series race witnessed in Extreme Sailing Hawaii.
The race is the jewel in the crown of the famous California to Hawaii Trans-Pacific, which pits 70 one million dollar yachts against each other in a perilous ocean crossing. Once the boats get to Hawaii, several of them compete for trophies—and bragging rights—in a race that’s been around in one form or another for three decades.
On Extreme Sailing Hawaii, you’ll watch five-ton oceangoing yachts battle it out head-to-head and mere feet apart. The seas are high, the speeds are fast, the competition is fierce, and the smallest mistake can be deadly. It’s like Nascar on water. The show also spotlights the intrepid crews and their onboard responsibilities.
Don’t miss Extreme Sailing Hawaii. It’s some of the most exciting—and dangerous—sailing you’ll ever see. |
